About Elms Sans

Elms Sans is a geometric sans serif designed by Amarachi Nwauwa of Gida Type Studio and published on Google Fonts in 2025 under the SIL Open Font License. Its skeleton follows early geometric models, with round bowls and even stroke weight, but the designer deliberately loosened the rigidity of that tradition: spacing is open, counters are generous, and the proportions carry a quiet warmth rather than compass-and-ruler coldness. It ships as a variable font with two axes, weight and italic, covering nine weights from Thin to Black, so one file serves everything from hairline display settings to heavy UI labels.

That range makes it a practical system typeface. Light and Regular hold up in body copy and interface text, while Bold through Black give headlines a solid, contemporary presence. Designers reach for Elms Sans where they might otherwise license Futura, Avenir or a geometric like Circular or Sofia Pro, getting a neutral but friendly geometric voice that is free to use in client work, apps and print.

Display + body that work together

A grammar of empty space
Two thousand years of letterforms boil down to a handful of decisions — width, weight, proportion. Pick a pair you trust, and let the rest take care of itself.

Headlines that read at a glance
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
