DM Sans
A free alternative to Aeonik.
About DM Sans
DM Sans is a low-contrast geometric sans commissioned by Google and drawn by Colophon Foundry, tuned for small sizes and short interface text. Its bowls are circular but tempered by grotesque openness, and a large x-height keeps it legible where stricter geometrics come apart. An alternate single-story 'g' is available, though the default double-story form reads better in running text.
As a substitute it maps most directly onto Aeonik and Google Sans, and it covers Circular, Airbnb Cereal, and Spotify Mix in the same lineage. What it reproduces is the register rather than the quirks: round, friendly, screen-first. Set against Futura or Gotham it trades letterform purity for body-copy legibility — the double-story 'g' is the obvious tell. Choose DM Sans when the target is product UI and small text rather than poster headlines.

DM Sans head to head
DM Sans is also a free alternative to…
- Aeonik → The closest free match — a geometric low-contrast sans with the same tempered circularity as Aeonik, round enough to feel geometric but with grotesque openness that keeps it from reading as Futura. Its neutral, screen-first proportions map almost directly onto Aeonik's role.
- Airbnb Cereal → Shares the Circular-adjacent look Cereal is famous for — low contrast, round geometry, screen-first metrics. A safe, polished choice for product UI in the Airbnb register.
- Circular → Low-contrast geometric sans with circular bowls and a large x-height; enabling the alternate single-story 'g' makes it an even closer echo of Circular. Excellent for small UI text where Circular is typically used.
- Futura → A geometric workhorse drawn for screen use. The double-story 'g' is a departure from Futura's single-story 'g', but the underlying construction is geometric — choose this when body-copy legibility matters more than letterform purity.
- gg sans → A low-contrast geometric grotesque built for small screen sizes, matching gg sans's clean geometry in UI text.
- Google Sans → Commissioned by Google itself as a low-contrast geometric for UI and short text — effectively the openly licensed cousin of the Google Sans aesthetic. The closest free match at body and interface sizes.
- Gotham → Geometric workhorse drawn for screen use. Tighter proportions than Gotham but the same geometric construction principles — a strong choice when interface UI is the target rather than poster headlines.
- Neue Montreal → Blends geometric construction with grotesque openness to land in a balanced, modern middle ground close to Neue Montreal's personality. More geometric and a touch warmer, but a dependable free choice for UI and marketing layouts.
- Sharp Grotesk → Approximates Sharp Grotesk's geometric-grotesque balance through a slightly rounder lens, with a huge weight range and an optical-size axis that make it flexible enough to cover both display and body roles.
- Spotify Mix → A low-contrast geometric sans that sits comfortably in the Circular lineage Spotify Mix grew out of — round, friendly, and excellent at UI sizes. It won't reproduce Mix's quirks, but it nails the overall Spotify register.
- TT Norms Pro → A low-contrast geometric sans with circular bowls and open apertures that echoes TT Norms Pro, adding a touch more humanist warmth in the stroke endings and slightly wider proportions.
- GT Walsheim → Low-contrast geometric sans designed for smaller sizes, with tidy round shapes that stay legible in interfaces. Cooler and more restrained than Walsheim — less of the hand-painted warmth — but a clean, versatile stand-in when neutrality matters more than character.
- PP Mori → Low-contrast geometric sans with a compact, tidy set of forms. Slightly rounder and warmer than PP Mori, it holds up well in body text where PP Mori's minimalism can feel austere.
- Uber Move → Low-contrast geometric sans tuned for interface and text sizes, which lines up with Uber Move Text rather than Display. Neutral and even — a good body companion under a more expressive heading face.
