Carlito

Carlito is Łukasz Dziedzic's metric-compatible Calibri substitute, commissioned by Google for ChromeOS and built on the skeleton of his own Lato. The Lato origin shows in the warmth — slightly rounded, humanist forms rather than the anonymous corporate sans the brief might imply — while the character widths and spacing are set to Calibri's rather than Lato's. It's an office-document face first, designed to be substituted invisibly inside a file someone else authored.

That makes it the closest thing to Calibri that can legally be served. Swap it in and line lengths hold, page breaks land where they landed, and multi-page layouts stay put — precisely the failure mode of Calibri lookalikes that only match the look. Reach for it when a Word or PowerPoint file has to render faithfully on a machine without Microsoft's fonts, or when a web build needs to match a document already set in Calibri.
