About Besley

Besley is indestructible type's revival of Robert Besley's Clarendon, released in 2019 with the sturdy bracketed slab construction of the nineteenth-century original intact. Bracketed slabs, moderate contrast, and sturdy proportions give it the density newspaper display work needs. Real newspaper heritage sits in the drawing, and the bolder weights thicken into genuine display authority rather than simply scaling up.

Those bold weights get remarkably close to the chunky heft of NYT-style display serifs, which makes Besley a workable free answer to Cheltenham in headline settings. It reaches the punchy front-page presence of Guardian Headline Black as well, with the same bracketed weight behind it. Choose it for editorial headlines, mastheads, and anything that should look like it was set by a newspaper rather than a website — few free faces carry the right ancestry for that job.

Display + body that work together

Pages that earn the read
Body type does the heavy lifting. Get it right and the reader never thinks about it; get it wrong and they feel it before they can name what is off.

Headlines, written under pressure
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.
