About Baskervville

Baskervville is a scholarly revival of Baskerville's own 1750s type, drawn in 2019 at France's Atelier National de Recherche Typographique and distributed through Google Fonts. It returns to the classical proportions that later screen-oriented Baskervilles set aside, keeping the fine, sharply cut serifs and measured contrast of the transitional model. The finish is crisp rather than inky — the drawing follows the letterform itself, not the impression a hand press leaves in damp paper.

Among free serifs it lands closest to Mrs Eaves, sharing that refined book-page feel and the classical proportions Libre Baskerville abandons in favor of screen robustness. The difference is texture: Mrs Eaves carries a softness and an ink-on-paper weight that Baskervville trades for clarity and sharper detail. Choose it for book pages, long-form editorial, and identity work that wants eighteenth-century authority at higher resolution.

Headlines, written under pressure
Two thousand years of letterforms boil down to a handful of decisions — width, weight, proportion. Pick a pair you trust, and let the rest take care of itself.

Quiet type that does the work
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
