Ballet

Ballet is a high-contrast pointed-pen script on Google Fonts, built as a variable font whose optical-size axis lets the delicacy of the hairlines be dialed in. The contrast is extreme in the way pointed-pen writing is extreme — shades swelling where pressure lands, upstrokes thinning almost to nothing — and the axis governs exactly how far that thinning goes, so the script can be tuned to survive at small sizes or opened up to its most fragile setting for display.

That variability is what recommends it against Zapfino. Ballet doesn't reproduce Zapfino's extravagant swashes or towering ascenders, but it echoes the quality that made Zapfino unusual: a script that changes character depending on how it's set. Use it for invitations, titles, and editorial display where a formal script is wanted — and set the optical size to the size actually being used, or the hairlines will disappear.
