Netflix Sans vs Plus Jakarta Sans
Netflix Sans is the proprietary typeface Netflix's in-house brand team drew with Dalton Maag in 2018 to replace Gotham, described by its design lead as "an approachable geometric grotesque." Plus Jakarta Sans is Gumpita Rahayu's 2020 geometric sans for Tokotype, commissioned for Jakarta's +Jakarta City of Collaboration identity and then open-sourced. Both are clean, low-contrast, broadly geometric faces — but one is locked inside a single brand while the other is free for anyone to ship.
Netflix Sans is a commercial font, so it is shown here in Montserrat, its closest free alternative. All free alternatives to Netflix Sans →
- Netflix Sans is a bespoke corporate face that is not sold or licensed to the public at all, so for any non-Netflix project the licensing question is not a cost but a hard stop; Plus Jakarta Sans is under the SIL Open Font License on Google Fonts.
- Netflix Sans was drawn with cinematic, wide-feeling uppercase proportions and a compact, efficient lowercase, plus an arched cut on the lowercase t that echoes the Netflix wordmark.
- Plus Jakarta Sans is nearly monoline with pointed curves, a slightly taller x-height and open counters, drawing on Futura, Neuzeit Grotesk and 1930s grotesques.
- Plus Jakarta Sans ships as a variable font on a weight axis from ExtraLight up, with italics and three stylistic alternate sets (Lancip, Lurus, Lingkar); Netflix Sans was released in six static weights from Thin to Black for internal use.
Netflix Sans is only a reference point — it's the look to study if you want a neutral geometric grotesque with cinematic caps and a compact lowercase, but you cannot legally use it outside Netflix.
Reach for Plus Jakarta Sans when you want that same friendly geometric register for brand sites, product UI and headings, with a variable weight range and alternates you can actually license and deploy for free.
