Bodoni vs Pistilli Roman
Two extreme-contrast Didones separated by nearly two centuries. Bodoni descends from the types Giambattista Bodoni cut in Parma in the late 1700s, a rational modern face with flat unbracketed serifs that has been revived by ATF, Bauer, Monotype, Linotype and ITC. Pistilli Roman is a 1964 Herb Lubalin and John Pistilli design in the French Didot style, built for phototype headline setting with hairlines so fine they could cut through paper on a letterpress.

- Bodoni exists in many versions, from Heinrich Jost's 1926 Bauer Bodoni to Sumner Stone's ITC Bodoni with optical sizes at 6, 12 and 72 point, so you can pick a cut tuned for text or for display.
- Pistilli Roman was released only as phototype for the Typositor and has never been officially digitized; what you license today are revivals such as Jason Walcott's Eloquent JF Pro, which add swashes and ligatures the original lacked.
- Pistilli Roman pushes thick-to-thin contrast and razor hairlines further than most Bodonis, which makes it a headline face only, while a text-sized Bodoni cut can still work at 10 to 12 point.
- Bodoni's regular, slightly condensed structure reads as classical and restrained, whereas Pistilli Roman carries the lush, advertising-era Lubalin feel, with its ampersand as a signature letter.
- Both are commercial fonts, so a full family license is a real line item, and Bodoni's many competing versions mean the price and quality vary widely by foundry.
