OpenAI Sans vs ABC Favorit
Two sans-serifs from the same Berlin foundry, ABC Dinamo, built for very different audiences. OpenAI Sans is the bespoke typeface at the center of OpenAI's February 2025 rebrand, while ABC Favorit is Dinamo's retail grotesque, drawn by Johannes Breyer and Fabian Harb and developed between 2013 and 2017. Both mix geometric structure with small deliberate quirks, but one is a single-client identity font and the other is a broad commercial family anyone can license.

- OpenAI Sans was drawn to consolidate the six or seven typefaces OpenAI previously used, and it folds the brand's black circular cursor, 'the point', into its letterforms.
- OpenAI describes its font as blending geometric precision with a rounded, approachable character, whereas Dinamo calls Favorit a straightforward, low-contrast grotesque with subtle oddities and a humorous touch.
- Favorit is a deep system: eight weights with italics plus Compressed, Condensed, Extended, Expanded, Lining and Mono sub-families, and Cyrillic, Greek, Hangul and Arabic extensions.
- OpenAI Sans is a bespoke corporate typeface with no public license, and at launch Dinamo was still working on its global scripts and a mono version.
- ABC Favorit is a paid commercial font: Dinamo offers trial fonts, but desktop and web use for a client project means buying a license, so budget is a real factor.
You can only reach for OpenAI Sans if you are OpenAI; for everyone else it is a reference point for a warm, slightly irregular geometric sans, not an option.
Reach for ABC Favorit when you want a quietly quirky grotesque with a full width and weight range for editorial, branding and product work, and the licensing fee fits the budget.
